Agricultural and Livestock Production

Shandong’s natural and human resources means that it is a major agricultural province in China. In 1997, it produced more than 41 million tonnes of grain. Despite the extensive cropping activities, however, Shandong Province is noted more for its livestock activities. In 1999, there were 9.8 million bovines, 25.6 million pigs and 25.4 million sheep and goats. In 1999, Shandong produced 5.3 million tonnes of meat and has consistently been one of China’s largest livestock producers since the first half of the 1990s. The gross value of agricultural production of Rmb220 billion in 1999 accounted for 30% of gross domestic product of the province.

Revisions by the State Statistical Bureau in October 1998 had a dramatic impact on official estimates of cattle numbers and beef production in Shandong Province. Cattle numbers for 1997 were revised down by more than 53% to 7.73 million and beef production by 55% to 445 kt. The revisions were much greater than in the neighbouring Central Plains province of Henan where cattle numbers were revised down by only 15% and beef production by 22%. Official figures for cattle numbers and beef production in Shandong rose dramatically in 1998 and 1999, but not to the pre-1998 census revision levels.
